Virtual Presence is the ability to communicate with impact in a virtual environment, in ways that engage, inspire, and motivate others. Think of it as leadership presence in a virtual environment.
The biggest challenge to your presence in a virtual environment is: the audience can’t see you and you can’t see the audience. The best way to overcome that challenge, and to up your virtual presence, is to BE ALL IN! “BE ALL IN” means being fully focused, energized, and present in the moment.
3 WAYS to “BE ALL IN”:
#1) Mental Discipline – like learning a sport or losing weight, you have to be focused and constantly practice to achieve results.
TIP!: In virtual meetings, make it a practice to turn off your phone, close other windows on your computer, and be here now!
#2) Activate Energy – when you are all in, your energy is contagious and sparks interactivity with your audience.
TIP!: Pump up your energy – this will elevate the group’s energy and activate the communication loop (exchange of energy between speaker and audience).
#3) Take Control – when you are fully present, you are tuned to what’s being said/or not being said. This greater awareness, gives you the ability to steer the meeting/conversation. When you are all in, you can better access a state of flow that enables you to instinctively make high-impact moves.
TIP!: Listen more than you talk. Don’t be afraid of brief silences or pauses. Heed your intuition and ask open-ended questions that spark discussion and draw out the quieter members of the audience.
